In a world that rewards loudness, extroversion and being busy it is really easy to feel ungrounded and disconnected. In fact, I would go so far to say that for many of us we are living in a constant state of disconnection.
I can fully relate to this...
As a sensitive soul, a cup of coffee can feel like a line of speed, a crowded train trip can feel like a violation of all my senses and loud noises and bright lights can leave me feeling nauseous.
When we experience a sense of disconnect there is a tendency to disassociate. Over the past few years I have been learning ways to ground myself in my body when i am in a situation of stress. I want to share a simple technique with you that has really helped me in staying grounded.
FEELING INTO BODILY SENSATIONS
When you fully immerse yourself into a physical sensation the mind tends to slow right down. This can be as simple as feeling your body against the chair you are sitting on or perhaps the contact your feet are making with the floor. I often imagine doing a scan of my body mainly feeling the sensations around my legs and up the back of my spine. I have noticed that when I am feeling disconnected most of my energy gravitates towards the top half of my body and it is really helpful to re-sensitise to the lower half. The good thing about this method is that you can do it without anyone needing to know. If you have more time you might want to do a 5 minute walking meditation. This involves just paying close attention to your bodily sensations while walking.
I would love to hear how you go about staying grounded in this busy world! Share any thoughts in the comments below!
